Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged this Sunday and left the hospital in Brasilia on his own after being hospitalized for three weeks following surgery for a severe intestinal obstruction. The 70-year-old far-right leader left DF Star Hospital accompanied by his wife Michelle and some of the medical team that cared for him.
The former head of state greeted a group of supporters who approached the door of the private clinic where he had been admitted since the night of April 12 and spoke briefly with the press. He took the opportunity to once again defend an amnesty law for those convicted for the coup attempt of January 8, 2023.
"Why this wickedness against those poor people who are in prison?" -said Bolsonaro-. The ex-president indicated that he intends to attend the demonstration in Brasilia in favor of that amnesty law which will take place next Wednesday.
However, the doctors recommended him "rest," "avoiding crowds," and a "restricted diet." Bolsonaro was discharged after showing positive progress in recent days, overcoming episodes of high blood pressure and liver inflammation.
The former president, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, underwent intestinal surgery on April 13. With this last operation, he has already been through the operating room seven times to correct digestive issues since he was stabbed in the abdomen in 2018.
The surgery on April 13 lasted approximately 12 hours and was the most complex since the stabbing. It served to unblock the intestine and reconstruct the abdominal wall. Bolsonaro will be tried by the Supreme Court under the accusation of leading an attempt at a coup d'état to remain in power after losing the 2022 elections to Lula.
"They want to hide something..." -stated Bolsonaro- casting suspicion on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the case's instructor.
