Lula said during an official ceremony in Brasilia: "For the first time in 500 years in the history of this country, a person is being imprisoned for attempting a coup." The Supreme Court of Brazil last September convicted Bolsonaro of leading a "criminal organization" that included, in particular, high-ranking officers who allegedly conspired to prevent his leftist rival Lula, who defeated him in the October 2022 presidential election, from returning to power.
