Contemporary Challenges of the Region to Center the Conference Futures of Democracy in Brasilia

The International Conference Futures of Democracy will bring together academia, leaders, and civil society to discuss strategies that allow for strengthening democratic systems and building more resilient and equitable institutions.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA International), in collaboration with the Institute of Political Science of the University of Brasilia (UnB), has convened the International Conference Futures of Democracy, a space for dialogue and analysis aimed at reflecting on contemporary challenges and future projections of democracy, with a special emphasis on the context of Latin America.

Analysis and Strengthening of Regional Democracy

This event takes place against a global backdrop characterized by growing political polarization, persistent social inequalities, and rapid transformations driven by technology.

The organization integrates a gender and inclusion perspective, sensitivity to conflicts, and sustainable development into all its work, solidifying its position as one of the most reliable sources of data and analysis on global democratic health.

Key Thematic Axes of the Conference

The program for the International Conference includes a participatory workshop and a final debate session, structuring its discussions around four crucial dimensions for democratic health:

  1. Power, Technology, and State Capacity The capacity of States to effectively and timely respond to social demands in contexts of high complexity will be examined.

  2. Technologies and Democratic Utopias The opportunities and inherent risks that the accelerated digitalization presents for the evolution of democracy will be explored.

  3. Public Policies and State Capacities The capacity of States to effectively and timely respond to social demands in contexts of high complexity will be examined.

  4. Power and Inequalities How economic, social, and political asymmetries directly impact democratic quality will be analyzed.

Inaugural Session and Key Participants

On December 8 and 9, 2025, the forum will convene a diverse group of participants, including academics, prominent political figures, representatives of international organizations, government officials, and actors from civil society.

The central objective is to exchange ideas and experiences that actively contribute to the conceptualization and design of more stable and just democratic futures.

The formal inauguration of the conference will feature the participation of Dr. Marcela Ríos Tobar, Regional Director of IDEA International for Latin America and the Caribbean, who will subsequently join the inaugural panel.

Her efforts focus on strengthening electoral processes, constitutional elaboration, democracy assessment, and political participation and representation.

Dr. Marcela Ríos Tobar will be accompanied at the welcome ceremony by distinguished Brazilian personalities: Carmen Lucia, President of the Brazilian Electoral Court; Rozana Naves, President of the University of Brasilia; and Marisa von Bülow, Director of the Institute of Political Science of the University of Brasilia.

The conference seeks to generate an informed and plural debate on the necessary methodologies to reinforce democratic systems, ensure greater social inclusion, and build institutional structures capable of resisting scenarios of deep uncertainty.
