The Supreme Court has authorized former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) to undergo an ultrasound at the Federal Police headquarters where he is serving his sentence to evaluate the need for surgery, local media reported. Judge Alexandre de Moraes, the case's rapporteur at the Supreme Court, authorized the examination to be performed with a portable ultrasound device in the room where Bolsonaro is guarded, in order to confirm the existence of a bilateral inguinal hernia and assess the need for surgery. The magistrate responded to a request from the former president's defense, which had requested permission for him to leave the Federal Police headquarters in Brasília to be admitted to the hospital for an operation. Additionally, in analyzing the request, de Moraes stated that, according to previous judicial determinations, visits from already registered physicians do not require prior communication, as long as the established legal and judicial provisions are respected. The 70-year-old Bolsonaro suffers from sporadic hiccups attacks, an incipient skin cancer, and also the sequelae of previous abdominal surgeries due to a stabbing he suffered in 2018, when he was in full campaign for the elections that brought him to power that same year. The former president, sentenced to 27 years in prison, has been at the Federal Police headquarters since late November, when he was arrested after attempting to remove the electronic ankle bracelet imposed on him earlier by the Supreme Court with the help of a welder. Since then, the defense and the politician's own family have insisted in court and publicly that he be granted a humanitarian house arrest due to his repeated health problems.
