Lula Calls January 8th the Day of Democracy's Victory in Brazil

«It was that more just and less unequal country that the enemies of democracy tried to demolish on January 8,» he expressed. «It is a day that many people in this country can commemorate. First, for the maintenance of the Democratic State of Law.» Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Thursday that January 8 is «the day of the victory of democracy,» three years after the attempted coup d'état perpetrated by the followers of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, currently in prison for that crime. At an event held at the Palácio do Planalto in Brasília, Lula recalled the attack carried out by Bolsonaro's supporters (2019-2022), a week after the start of his current term. The uprising, characterized by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) as an attempted coup, left serious material damage and resulted in the detention of more than 2,000 people. «Second, with what we managed to conquer and put into practice in this country, social inclusion policies, which had the participation of all of you,» affirmed the president. Lula took stock of his three years in the current term, with positive results in the economic and social areas: «We can verify that we have lived the lowest accumulated inflation in the last four years of our history». Furthermore, Lula affirmed that the most conclusive proof of the strength of Brazilian democracy was the trial of the coup plotters by the Federal Supreme Court, which he congratulated for its «irreproachable conduct», which «did not yield to pressures or was intimidated by threats».
