Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from the hospital this Sunday after spending three weeks hospitalized in Brasília. Bolsonaro, 70 years old, underwent surgery for a severe intestinal obstruction, a complication resulting from the knife attack he suffered during his electoral campaign in 2018. He remained in intensive care for 17 days before being transferred to a regular ward.
Bolsonaro's return home comes at a crucial moment, as the date of his trial for his alleged involvement in an attempted coup at the end of his term (2019-2022) approaches. Hours before being discharged, Bolsonaro thanked on his social media, attributing his recovery to a "miracle."
This trial is of great importance as it marks a historic event, being the first time a former president is accused of an attempted coup since the end of the military dictatorship (1964-1985). The Supreme Federal Court decided to prosecute Bolsonaro in late March, and the prosecutor's office accuses him of leading a plot to prevent the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who defeated him in the 2022 elections.
Upon leaving the DF Star Hospital, the former president was greeted by a group of supporters who cheered him with shouts of "myth!" This public demonstration seeks to garner support for an amnesty project in Congress aimed at those convicted of storming the seats of the political and judicial powers in January 2023, carried out by Bolsonaro supporters. Bolsonaro has undergone multiple surgeries in recent years due to the attack he suffered in 2018.
On his social media, Bolsonaro thanked the medical team and stated he felt renewed upon returning home. Additionally, he announced that his "next challenge" will be to attend a political protest in Brasília next Wednesday.
