Brazil's Minister of Social Security, Carlos Lupi, resigned from his position on Friday after a corruption scheme was uncovered in his office. Through this scheme, approximately 1.125 million dollars were diverted from the accounts of around four million pensioners.
Although Lupi has not been directly implicated in the scandal, his resignation comes amid strong pressure from public opinion and the opposition. Authorities are expected to thoroughly investigate this case to determine the responsibilities of those involved.
In statements to the press, Lupi expressed: "I have decided to resign to allow the investigations to proceed impartially and without interference. My commitment has always been to ensure transparency and honesty in the handling of public funds, and I trust that this entire situation will be clarified."
The scandal has caused a great uproar in Brazil, where corruption at high levels of government is a sensitive issue for society. Lupi's resignation is seen as a first step to try to restore trust in public institutions and in the management of state resources.
