A case of animal abuse has caused strong indignation in Brazil and on international social networks after a video was shared showing a group of people brutally attacking a capybara. The incident occurred in the early hours of March 21 in the Ilha do Governador area of Rio de Janeiro. According to police reports, the attack was captured by security cameras, allowing the aggressors to be identified. The footage shows several people chasing, cornering, and beating the animal with sticks and iron bars. After the video went viral on social media, neighbors and organizations reported the case, accelerating the authorities' intervention. As a result, six adults were arrested, and two minors were taken into custody by the relevant authorities. The detainees face charges of animal abuse, as well as other crimes such as illicit association. In the case of the adults, there may be aggravating factors due to the involvement of minors in the attack. The authorities described the act as "extreme cruelty," noting that the animal was defenseless during the aggression. Following the attack, the capybara—a male adult weighing over 60 kg—was rescued by environmental units and urgently taken to a specialized veterinary center. Reports indicate the animal has a severe head trauma, injuries to various parts of its body, and remains sedated while receiving medical care. The case has been handed over to the corresponding police station, where investigations continue to determine all legal responsibilities.
