
Local authorities confirmed that there were clashes between fans of the Uruguayan club Peñarol and the police in Rio de Janeiro. Law enforcement agencies reported that the situation got out of control in the Maracanã area when several hundred fans attempted to break into the stadium where the match was taking place. Witnesses claim that fans actively clashed with police and use fireworks. In response, representatives of law enforcement agencies used tear gas and rubber bullets for crowd dispersal. It is clarified that the incident occurred before the friendly match between Peñarol and the local club Flamingo in Cuba Libertadores.
