Argentine Lawyer Accused of Racism in Brazil

An Argentine lawyer from Santiago del Estero, Agostina Páez, who was detained in Rio de Janeiro after being accused of racism, will meet with the Argentine consul in Brazil on Monday. The incident occurred when Páez and her friends were leaving a nightclub in southern Rio. According to the young woman, they had fully paid for their entry and all consumed items. However, upon leaving, venue employees began following them down the stairs, making obscene gestures, and laughing in their faces. "We told them they were robbing us, that they were thieves," Páez stated. Páez's lawyer, Sebastián Robles, announced they will request that the restrictive measure placed on his client, which prohibits her from leaving the country, be mitigated. "This is a very severe measure that does not contextualize what actually happened," the lawyer emphasized. In turn, Páez herself stated that the gesture, which was interpreted as racist, was not directed at the club staff. "The gestures were more for my friends, I couldn't see them well," she explained. Currently, the young woman will have to wear an electronic bracelet and appear before a Rio de Janeiro court.
