The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, urged the members of the Group of 20 (G20) to lead by example and use their influence to address the major global challenges. Guterres expressed this position ahead of the G20 Leaders' Summit to be held from November 18 to 19 in Rio de Janeiro.
According to Guterres, it is essential for the G20 to fulfill its role as an economic and diplomatic heavyweight in addressing key global issues. In his statements, he highlighted the importance of seeking peace, combating inequalities, facing climate change, and reforming global governance as essential priorities.
In his words, Guterres also pointed out the need to modernize the institutions responsible for solving problems on a global scale, considering that many of them still have structures from 80 years ago. The UN Secretary-General emphasized that the current international financial architecture is ineffective and unequal, requiring reforms to more equitably represent the global economy and the needs of developing countries.
Regarding specific situations, Guterres mentioned the importance of achieving peace in conflicts such as those in Ukraine and Gaza, calling for full compliance with the UN Charter, international resolutions, and international law as pathways to resolving these conflicts. Finally, he stressed that the G20 must lead by example, leveraging its economic and diplomatic relevance to drive concrete solutions in various global areas.
