The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, called on G20 leaders to step up for world peace. Guterres emphasized the need to address conflicts affecting various regions, specifically mentioning the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Sudan.

In a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Guterres highlighted that peace is fundamental and that as long as wars continue, the population suffers the terrible consequences. He urged the heads of state and government of the G20, which comprises the largest economies on the planet, to address existing conflicts.

Despite Brazil's position, which currently presides over the G20 and believes its role focuses on economic coordination, Guterres stressed that it is crucial for the group to engage in conflict prevention and resolution. The UN Secretary-General emphasized the importance of working towards peace in Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Sudan.

Regarding Gaza, Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the initiation of a process leading to a two-state solution. Concerning Lebanon, he called for the cessation of hostilities and compliance with Security Council resolutions. Additionally, he urged respect for the UN Charter, UN resolutions, and international law in Ukraine.

The Secretary-General alerted to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and emphasized that peace requires actions based on the values of the UN Charter and respect for the sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity of states. Guterres called on G20 leaders to take concrete actions in favor of world peace.
