Flamengo vs Lanus: Recopa Sudamericana Final at Maracanã

Buenos Aires, Feb 26 (NA) — Brazilian club Flamengo will host Argentine side Lanus on Thursday evening for the second leg of the Recopa Sudamericana. The Maracanã Stadium will be the stage for the decisive match of this competition, which pits the champions of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana against each other. The first leg, held last week in Argentina, ended in a 1-0 victory for Lanus, thanks to a goal from forward Rodrigo Castillo in the 32nd minute of the second half. In this way, Lanus will seek to become the fourth Argentine team to win the Recopa Sudamericana in the last 10 years, following River Plate, Defensa y Justicia, and Racing. River Plate won the 2016 edition by defeating Colombian Independiente Santa Fe 2-1 on aggregate, while in 2019 they overcame Brazilian Athletico Paranaense 3-1. Just two years later, Defensa y Justicia made history by beating Brazilian Palmeiras 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw on aggregate. Finally, Racing conquered the last edition of the Recopa Sudamericana by thrashing Brazilian Botafogo with a convincing 4-0 aggregate score. The only Argentine team to lose the Recopa Sudamericana in the last 10 years was Independiente, who fell to Brazilian Gremio on penalties in the 2018 edition. Other Brazilian champions during this period were Flamengo in 2020, Palmeiras in 2022, and Fluminense in 2024. Meanwhile, Colombian Atlético Nacional defeated Brazilian Chapecoense 5-3 on aggregate in 2017, and Ecuador's Independiente del Valle did the same against Flamengo in 2023.
