The Corinthians team won 2-0 at home against Barcelona from Ecuador in the second leg of the third round of the Copa Libertadores qualifying. Despite the victory, the unfavorable result from the first match prevented the Brazilians from advancing to the group stage of the tournament.
Goals from Félix Torres and André Carrillo, at 40 minutes in the first half and 39 in the second respectively, were insufficient for the team led by Ramón Díaz to overcome the series.
In a match marked by the expulsion of Leonai Souza from Barcelona of Ecuador for a double yellow card, Corinthians had control and generated multiple goal opportunities, with goalkeeper Contreras standing out as a key figure in keeping his net clean.
Despite getting closer to the needed score for qualification, the Brazilian team could not convert the chances created, facing an unbeatable Contreras at key moments. Torres’ goal and the goal validated after VAR review by Carrillo were not enough to reverse the deficit accumulated in the first leg match.
With this result, the Ecuadorian team secured a place in the continental competition after winning 3-0 in the first leg of the tie, leaving Corinthians out of the Copa Libertadores.
