A tragedy took place at the Church of San Francisco of Assisi, known as the "Golden Church" in Salvador, Brazil, when part of its wooden ceiling gave way. The coordinator of Civil Defense of Salvador, Sostenes Macedo, suggests that this may have occurred due to the excess weight of the wood in the central nave of the temple, built in 1723 and considered one of the important points of the historical and tourist heritage of Bahia.
The fatal victim of this incident was Giulia Righetto, a tourist from Sao Paulo who was visiting the church at the time of the collapse. Currently, firefighters are conducting investigations to determine the exact causes of the collapse.
The Golden Church is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World, according to reports from the Xinhua news agency. Shocked by what happened, authorities reported that, in addition to the fatal victim, five other people were injured in the incident. This event has caused dismay in the tourist neighborhood of Pelourinho, known for its colonial architecture in Salvador.
