The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, assured this Saturday that he will not leave the victims of the bad weather in the southeast of Brazil alone and assured that the Government will do everything in its power to help them rebuild their lives. Lula is visiting this Saturday some of the municipalities affected by the heavy rains that battered the so-called Zona da Mata, in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, between Monday and Friday, which have already left a balance of 70 dead and 3 missing. "We will mobilize resources, emergency teams and assistance programs to guarantee shelter, food and immediate medical care," said the Brazilian leader in a message published on social networks after visiting Ubá. The municipality, where about 100,000 people live and which was quite destroyed, six people died due to the downpours and two more are missing. Lula stated that the Government will support the reconstruction of that small population with new schools and businesses so that Ubá and the entire region can "grow again with security and dignity." Among the measures adopted by the Brazilian Government to help the municipalities affected by the rains are the delivery of eight health kits for emergencies, each with the capacity to attend to 12,000 people per month. Resources amounting to 5.4 million reais ($1.9 million) have also been allocated for humanitarian assistance and the restoration of basic services in Matias Barbosa, Ubá, and Juiz de Fora, the three cities most affected by the bad weather. Likewise, teams with "high-precision" technology were sent to support the search and rescue work for the victims. This Saturday, rescue brigades intensified the searches, thanks to the good weather that has been experienced in the region since the early hours of the day. However, the authorities insisted that the risk areas need to remain isolated because there is still a danger of landslides. According to the latest bulletin from the Fire Department, the number of fatal victims increased in the late morning after reporting four more dead in the municipality of Juiz de Fora, bringing the total to 64 dead. In addition, a minor continues to be missing. The devastation left behind by the floods and landslides caused by the rains forced about 4,700 people in the region to leave their homes and take refuge in temporary shelters.
