На.public hearing in the Senate Environment Committee, Marina Silva noted that the Pantanal region is experiencing the worst drought in the last 74 years. Fires have devastated the Amazon, the Cerrado, and the Pantanal itself, negatively impacting the region's biodiversity.
The minister called on the Brazilian Congress to create a specific regulatory framework for climate emergencies, as 1,942 municipalities in the country are at extreme climate risk. Despite budgetary efforts being made to combat the fires, Silva pointed out that the Ministry of the Environment did not suffer budget cuts, unlike other government areas.
In her intervention, Marina Silva explained that the government seeks to "level the playing field," that is, to mitigate the damage caused by drought and fires in the region. The current drought facing Brazil is the most intense since 1950, which has led to accelerated deterioration of the vegetation cover in the area.
In this critical scenario, the minister calls on Congress for concrete measures to address climate emergencies and protect the Pantanal, considered a natural treasure for its rich biodiversity threatened by these extreme phenomena.
