Trump's Media Company Sues Brazilian Supreme Court Judge

The media company of former U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against a judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil for allegedly illegally suppressing the social media activity of Brazilian conservative voices that support President Jair Bolsonaro, who has been accused of a coup d'état. The Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) and the video platform Rumble filed the lawsuit in a court in Tampa, Florida, detailing the action to stop attempts at illegal censorship against U.S. companies.

According to the accusation, Judge Alexandre de Moraes has tried to illegally restrict the activity of these conservative voices, violating the First Amendment protections of freedom of expression in the U.S. Constitution. The plaintiffs seek a jury trial and a permanent injunction that protects the digital sovereignty of the United States.

Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of Trump, faces a complaint from the Brazilian Prosecutor's Office for allegedly leading a plot to annul Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory in the 2022 elections. The Supreme Court of Brazil has notified the former president of this accusation, and the process is already underway.

The defenses of Bolsonaro and the other defendants have a deadline of 15 days to submit allegations, while the investigating judge, Alexandre de Moraes, will take the complaint to the First Chamber of the Supreme, which will decide whether to initiate a trial against the former head of state. The trial is expected to conclude this year to avoid interfering with the 2026 elections. Lawyer Eloísa Machado, a law professor, points out that the complaint against Bolsonaro is consistent and evidences his intention to remain in power at any cost.
