The Brazilian government, through its Minister of Women, Cida Gonçalves, emphasized the importance of intensifying the fight against femicide and other forms of violence against women worldwide during her intervention at the 9th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York.
Gonçalves stressed the need to protect women's right to life, pointing out a concerning increase in gender-based violence and femicide in Brazil, especially sexual violence against women, girls, and adolescents. She proposed the implementation of specialized services and the guarantee of legislation allowing legal abortion to provide adequate care for victims of violence.
The minister also highlighted the importance of addressing the situation of women in poverty, emphasizing that the most affected are often black women, single mothers, and those living in extreme vulnerability. In this regard, she mentioned the initiative led by Brazil in the Global Alliance Against Hunger to tackle this issue.
The event in New York commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action of 1995, regarded as a milestone in the global fight for women's rights. This multilateral agreement established 12 priority areas to promote gender equality and guide governments and institutions in this direction, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
Within the framework of CSW69, the discussions aim to review and assess the implementation of these initiatives, seeking to advance the promotion of gender equality and women's empowerment worldwide.
