The president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, reaffirmed his commitment to a fairer and non-discriminatory football amid the possibility of Brazilian teams leaving the organization.
The controversy arose after an incident during a Copa Libertadores U-20 match between Cerro Porteño from Paraguay and Palmeiras from Brazil, where a Brazilian player received racist insults. This led Palmeiras president, Leila Pereira, to suggest that Brazil should leave Conmebol for Concacaf.
Domínguez sparked further controversy by comparing Brazil's exit from Conmebol to "Tarzan without Cheetah," generating outrage among Brazilians. In response, the president issued an apology, clarifying that his intention was not to belittle anyone and emphasizing the importance of inclusion and respect in football.
The official stated that the participation of teams from the 10 member countries is essential for the Conmebol Libertadores, underscoring his commitment to the values of respect and inclusion both in football and in society.
