Brazil Offers Reward for Drug Lord's Capture

Brazil is offering a reward of 100,000 reals for information on the head of the Comando Vermelho, Edgar Alves Andrade, known as "Doca da Penha" or "Bear", who is being intensely sought after in the neighboring country. Andrade, 55, has 20 pending arrest warrants and is being investigated for more than 100 homicides, including executions of minors and disappearances of neighbors, according to the Disque Denúncia service. Police sources revealed to Noticias Argentinas that "Brazil has not issued any red notice through Interpol for the search" for "Doca", as they believe he "is still hiding" in the neighboring country. "We are on alert and ready for a red notice that Interpol Brazil issues, but so far they have not done so," spokespeople confirmed to NA. Andrade was born in the state of Paraíba and raised in the dangerous Vila Cruzeiro community in Rio de Janeiro, and he has been a fugitive from the Brazilian prison system for years. In fact, he is so dangerous that the authorities of this South American country are offering 100,000 reals (about $18,730 or 27,500,000 Argentine pesos) for information on his whereabouts or for his capture. This is the largest reward offered in the program's history, comparable only to the one set in 2000 for Fernandinho Beira-Mar, another Rio drug lord.
