The process initiated at the Supreme Federal Court corresponds to Core 3 of the coup plot, after, in its first phase, Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for leading the coup attempt. According to Gonet, “the investigations reveal the declared homicidal and brutal disposition of the criminal organization, which for this purpose orchestrated and carried out properly armed coercive actions”. Among those prosecuted are retired General Estevam Cals Theophilo Gaspar de Oliveira and Colonels Bernardo Romão Corrêa Netto, Fabrício Moreira de Bastos, Márcio Nunes de Resende Jr. and Hélio Ferreira Lima. To date, the Supreme Federal Court has sentenced 15 people for the coup attempt that sought to keep Bolsonaro in power. Last week, the Supreme Federal Court confirmed the 27-year and three-month sentence for Bolsonaro in the criminal action for the coup plot after losing the 2022 elections, by rejecting the appeal filed. In addition to Bolsonaro, appeals were also denied to the former minister and vice-presidential candidate in the 2022 ticket, Walter Braga Netto; Admiral Almir Garnier, former commander of the Navy; Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Security of the Federal District; Augusto Heleno, former Minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI); Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, former Minister of Defense; and Alexandre Ramagem, former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin). The Attorney General of Brazil, Paulo Gonet, requested this Tuesday the conviction of nine elite Army soldiers and a Federal Police agent involved in the 2022 coup attempt, a plot that, according to the accusation, contemplated the murder of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Supreme Federal Court (STF) judge Alexandre de Moraes. According to the Attorney General's Office (PGR), the defendants acted on two fronts. The first was to pressure the top leadership of the Armed Forces to guarantee support for the coup led by outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) and, the second, to carry out field actions aimed at destabilizing the constitutional system and provoking an institutional rupture. The group allegedly attempted to put into operation the plan called “Yellow and Green Dagger”, which included the kidnapping, detention and even murder of the country's main authorities. According to Gonet, the defendants used their “technical knowledge and strategic positions to carry out field operations with the aim of neutralizing the central authorities of the democratic regime and promoting the social instability necessary for the institutional rupture”. The prosecutor cited recordings from Federal Police agent Wladimir Matos Soares, in which he admits that his team was willing to use “lethal force” and that he would “kill half the world” if necessary to prevent Lula da Silva, winner of the 2022 elections against Bolsonaro, from taking office. The accused are part of the elite intelligence and rapid action command of the Army, known as the “black kids” (young blacks). As well as Lieutenant Colonels Rafael Martins de Oliveira, Rodrigo Bezerra de Azevedo, Ronald Ferreira de Araújo Jr. and Sérgio Ricardo Cavaliere de Medeiros, in addition to Federal Police agent Wladimir Matos Soares. The Attorney General's office requested that nine accused be convicted of five crimes, including that of attempted coup, while in the case of Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Ferreira, Gonet asked that he be tried only for incitement to crime, for having had only a supporting role.
