Brazilian President Concerned About U.S. Military Presence in Caribbean

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed deep concern over the military deployment of the United States in the Caribbean Sea. He announced his intention to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump to prevent a potential conflict with Venezuela. "I am very concerned about the military presence the United States has in the Caribbean, and I intend to speak with President Trump about it," Lula da Silva told Brazilian media after participating in the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. "There is nothing that justifies a conflict," he stated. Lula da Silva also expressed concern because South America is considered a "zone of peace," without the presence of "nuclear weapons" and "atomic bombs," so there is nothing that justifies a conflict. "War makes no sense. To end it, who knows when it will end," he added. The U.S. military presence in the Caribbean has increased in recent weeks, amid Trump authorizing the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to conduct covert operations on Venezuelan soil. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, in turn, warned major airlines on November 21 of a "potentially dangerous" situation when flying over Venezuela and recommended caution.
