Lula and Kast agree to strengthen Brazil-Chile cooperation

Brazil's President Lula and Chile's President-elect Kast held their first meeting, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in combating crime and developing infrastructure. The leaders discussed a bioceanic corridor project and tasked their foreign ministers with meeting to implement the agreements.

According to a statement from the Brazilian Presidency, the progressive leader highlighted the South American Integration Routes project, which provides for the construction of bioceanic corridors with Chilean ports to strengthen connectivity between Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and Chile. Both leaders also expressed their willingness to expand cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, renewable energies, trade, and tourism, and tasked their Foreign Ministers to meet in the coming months to follow up on the agreements. The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the elected President of Chile, José Antonio Kast, agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation to combat organized crime and promote regional stability during their first bilateral meeting, official Brazilian sources reported this Wednesday. The progressive and right-wing leaders met on Tuesday night in Panama City, on the sidelines of the Latin American and Caribbean International Economic Forum, which begins today in the Central American country. The day before, Kast had already stated that cooperation between the two countries could "lead the change" the region needs in terms of security, economic progress, and overcoming poverty. In addition to Lula and Kast, their participation was confirmed by the presidents of Colombia, Gustavo Petro; Ecuador, Daniel Noboa; Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, and the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness. The forum, organized by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) and known as the Latin American Davos, is holding its second edition in the Panamanian capital with the aim of discussing how to position the region on the global stage. The meeting, which lasted about an hour, left the commitment to deepen bilateral relations and expand coordination in public security matters.
