Science demands action: Amazon Report 2025 highlights the urgency of preserving Amazon connectivity

The Amazon Report 2025 (AR2025), produced by 145 experts, highlights the urgent need to preserve the ecological and cultural connectivity of the Amazon, essential for climate balance and sustainable livelihoods.

"AR2025 provides the necessary scientific basis for policymakers to act decisively, preserve connectivity, stabilize the climate, protect biodiversity, and ensure sustainable livelihoods," said Carlos Nobre, co-chair of the Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA).

Threats and a call to action

The AR2025 warns that the Amazon, home to over 47 million people and nearly 13% of the planet's known species, faces growing pressures pushing it towards a point of no return.

This publication, the most comprehensive scientific analysis of the region to date, was developed by 145 high-level international scientists and experts.

The Amazon Report 2025 emphasizes the urgent need to preserve Amazon connectivity, namely the ecological, climatic, cultural, and socio-economic interdependence that sustains both the Amazon basin and the planet's balance.

"The Amazon is not just a regional concern: it is a global safeguard."

Threats include illegal land appropriation, illegal mining and logging, drug trafficking, and deforestation, whose combined effects with climate change have irreversible consequences on rainfall regimes, carbon storage, and human well-being.

The report highlights that maintaining ecological and socio-cultural links is essential to tackle the global climate crisis.

It includes a series of Calls to Action with key recommendations:

• Achieve zero deforestation and degradation. • Expand territorial governance and the rights of local communities. • Redirect subsidies from extractive sectors to sustainable economies. • Strengthen regional cooperation and access to climate finance.

Science and youth

During the event, the SPA also presented the Amazon Youth Manifesto, developed by the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) with the participation of over 200 young leaders.

The document captures intergenerational demands and innovative solutions, positioning youth as protagonists in climate decision-making.

Emma Torres, SDSN Vice President for the Americas, stated that the AR2025 and the Youth Manifesto are complementary, with one offering "rigorous science and evidence-based solutions" and the other "the aspirations and urgency of new generations."
