The former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years in prison for sedition, remains admitted to an intensive care unit in Brasilia with no forecast of discharge, as his renal function has improved, but inflammatory indicators have worsened, his doctors reported this Sunday. The leader of the Brazilian far-right was hospitalized on Friday to be treated for a bacterial bronchopneumonia he contracted in his cell at the Brasilia penitentiary, and although his health is considered stable, doctors have ruled out discharging him for now. His health 'evolved with clinical stability and improvement in renal function, but with a new elevation of inflammatory markers in the blood,' according to the medical bulletin released this Sunday by the Brasilia DF Star hospital. Doctors stated that due to the worsening of the inflammatory process, they expanded the antibiotic treatment being administered to the 70-year-old former head of state. They clarified, however, that the army reserve captain is evolving without the need for devices to help him breathe or any other intensive clinical support, and that they have intensified the respiratory and motor physical therapy he is receiving. Bolsonaro was transferred to the hospital on Friday after presenting a 'serious' case of fever, 'very intense' chills, vomiting episodes, and difficulty breathing in the cell where he has been held since January at the Papuda Penitentiary Complex. The bronchopneumonia was caused by a bacteria that settled in both lungs, with greater affectation on the left, probably as a consequence of bronchoaspiration, i.e., the accidental passage of fluids from the digestive system into the respiratory tract. His recurring health problems are attributed to complications from abdominal wounds he suffered in a knife attack in 2018, during that year's presidential campaign. Since then, he has undergone several hospitalizations, surgeries, and medical procedures to treat complications derived from the assault. Bolsonaro has been serving a 27-year prison sentence since last November for 'leading' a coup plot to 'perpetuate himself in power' after losing the 2022 elections to current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, according to the ruling by the Supreme Court. Bolsonaro's family and lawyers took advantage of the new hospitalization to insist that, for humanitarian reasons, the Supreme Court grant him the benefit of house arrest, something the court has denied on different occasions.
