Unesco Report Highlights Attacks on Education in Palestine

The report released in Brazil reveals that 61% of schools in the Gaza Strip, which has been under constant bombings and invasions by the Israeli Army since last year, were directly attacked by July 2024. According to the Global Education Monitoring Report 2024 (GEM), the State of Palestine suffered 720 attacks on education in 2023.

This situation has persisted over time, even before the Hamas attacks in October 2023. Since 2013, Palestine, along with Afghanistan, has been the target of more than 100 attacks on education each year, except for one. The Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip since October of last year has left over 43,000 dead and 101,500 injured, in addition to causing thousands of displacements.

Globally, attacks on schools reached around 3,000 in 2022, increased by the war in Ukraine and again in 2023 due to the war in Palestine. The report is independent but is supported by UNESCO.

The Global Education Monitoring Report 2024 (GEM) was presented in Fortaleza, Brazil, coinciding with the Global Education Meeting organized by UNESCO and a series of G20 ministers' meetings, which bring together the world's strongest economies.
