The global distributor MUBI has announced the theatrical release of "The Secret Agent," the new film by Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, scheduled for February 26, 2026. The film has received four nominations at the 98th Academy Awards®, including the categories for Best Picture and Best International Feature. At the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, the film was honored in the categories of Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language and Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for Wagner Moura. At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the film was highly praised by critics, earning Mendonça Filho the award for Best Director and Moura the recognition for Best Actor. The plot follows a university professor who travels from São Paulo to Recife during Carnival week to reunite with his son. However, he discovers he is being watched by his new neighbors, finding himself trapped in a web of espionage and political corruption. The film features a stellar cast including Wagner Moura (Narcos, Civil War), Maria Fernanda Cândido (The Traitor), and Gabriel Leone. In Mexico and Chile, MUBI will handle distribution; in Argentina and Uruguay via Maco Cine; in Colombia by Cineplex Colombia; and in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Central America through Cineplex USA.
