Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro suffers from two inguinal hernias and will have to undergo surgery, one of his lawyers, João Henrique de Freitas, said on Sunday.

According to the lawyer, the diagnosis comes from the ultrasound that doctors performed with a portable ultrasound device at the headquarters of the Federal Police, where the former head of state is serving his sentence.

However, he emphasized that the medical team "recommended" that Bolsonaro undergo surgery, the "only" "definitive" treatment to resolve the medical condition.

This message from the defense was reposted by one of the former president's sons, councilman Carlos Bolsonaro, who stated that pre-existing medical studies "had already confirmed the need" for the Brazilian far-right leader to undergo surgery for this diagnosis.

But the Supreme Court justice and rapporteur for the former president's case, Alexandre de Moraes, did not grant the defense's request and "absurdly" ordered that new studies be presented.

"Something that even drug trafficking leaders do not have to face when they need surgery," denounced the former president's second son on X.

The former president's defense had requested permission for Bolsonaro to be admitted to the hospital to undergo surgery for the hernias.

However, De Moraes argued that since Bolsonaro entered the Federal Police headquarters where he is serving his sentence, he has received constant medical attention and no emergency situation has been recorded since then.

He added that the medical examinations presented by the defense to justify the transfer to the hospital are not recent, with the last one being done three months ago, without any recommendation for the immediate need for surgery.

Based on this, he determined that the Federal Police carry out a new medical examination, so that it can respond to the defense's request.

In addition to the hernias, the 70-year-old Bolsonaro also suffers from sporadic hiccups, incipient skin cancer, and the sequelae of previous abdominal surgeries due to a stab wound he suffered in 2018, when he was in the middle of the election campaign that brought him to power that same year.
