Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been authorized to undergo surgery for an inguinal hernia, as confirmed by Supreme Federal Court (STF) Judge Alexandre de Moraes. Consequently, the former president will be admitted on Wednesday to begin preoperative procedures and the surgery. Bolsonaro, who is serving a suspended sentence for an attempted coup, must undergo a surgical procedure to treat a bilateral inguinal hernia and hiccups. An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue from inside the abdomen protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscle wall, forming a bulge. When this happens on both sides, it is called a bilateral inguinal hernia. Furthermore, as reported by Noticias Argentinas agency, Moraes authorized only Bolsonaro's wife, Michelle, to be his sole companion during the procedure. Bolsonaro has been detained at the Federal Police Superintendency since November 22, after violating the electronic ankle bracelet he wore while under house arrest. The former president was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for leading an organization that attempted to prevent the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and subvert the democratic state of law. This event took place just days before Lula's inauguration, who had defeated Bolsonaro in the presidential elections.
