Former Manchester City captain, Brazilian Fernandinho, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 40, after a career spanning over two decades. "It's time to enjoy my time with my family," he stated. During his time with Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, Fernandinho won six league titles. The former Brazil international, who also made his name at Shakhtar, said after playing in a charity match in Curitiba: "There is nothing left that motivates me in football, I have already achieved everything I aspired to." The defensive midfielder has been a free agent since his contract with Atlético Paranaense, the club where he began his professional career and returned to in 2022, expired in December 2024.
