Bolsonaro Granted Temporary House Arrest

Brazil's Supreme Court has allowed former President Jair Bolsonaro to be under house arrest for 90 days after being discharged from the hospital. He is convicted of attempting a coup.

Bolsonaro Granted Temporary House Arrest

The Supreme Court of Brazil granted former President Jair Bolsonaro a 'temporary' house arrest on Tuesday. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison for sedition and is currently hospitalized with pneumonia, official sources reported. Judge Alexandre de Moraes, in charge of the case, partially accepted a request from the far-right leader's lawyers and backed the Prosecutor's Office's criteria. On Monday, the Prosecutor's Office had expressed its support for house arrest, considering that he 'requires constant and careful attention.' The magistrate, however, decided that the former head of state will be allowed to stay at home for 90 days from his medical discharge, for which there is no forecast yet. After that period, he will reassess the conditions in which the former governor (2019-2022) will have to serve the rest of the sentence imposed by the Supreme Court for plotting a coup d'état after losing the 2022 elections.
